julie and i have been a couple since 1987. our daughter trixie was born to julie in 1997, and our son micah was placed with us for adoption in 2003. in between there was a bit of infertility drama and grief (on my part...). sometimes we succeed more, and sometimes less, at living simply in the heart of the city. we're also currently trying to decide whether to adopt a third child.

today's kitchen update

we've decided on the tile for the kitchen backsplash.  it will be this one:

Tile

and so you have a better idea of what it's going with - the countertops will look something like this, but more of a darker charcoal color:

Countertopkitchen1

so now - what color for the cabinets, trim and walls?

Oh, Afrindimum, it's all so beautiful! I would leave the cabinets as is--the light wood contrasts with the darker tile and countertops. I don't know about the walls. Maybe something neutral. Again, I'd be worried that any more dark would really weigh the kitchen down.

OH! It's the upper cabinets that need paint. not the lowers. the uppers are going to remain - the old baby-poop ones - they need to be painted desperately. so i need a new color for them b/c we can't afford to replace them yet. make sense?

and you all know that the photo in this post is NOT my kitchen, right? it's just a representation of what the counter tops will look like in my teeny tiny fugly kitchen. :)

dang. LOVE the tile. Green is my favorite color. Now I'm getting the itchin' for my kitchen do-over. Yikes.

Could you paint the cabinets a soft sea green, tonally similar to the softest colour in the tiles, or would that be too colorful? (Note I said sea green, not seaFOAM!)

Ok..first ..love the tile!! Are they ceramic or glass? Hard to tell from the pics.

Looking at your pics..I am assuming the floor is new or will stay?? So you have a similar beigey wood thing going on there..and I am reading a gray in the gout lines?

Don't know if you picked the countertop color yet..I like the grays with the natural maples, stainless, mod clean look. I would suggest that you get a Greenish Gray to pull from the tiles. Be carefule that you don't go BLUE gray..that will look "off".
Now upper cab paint...definatly a challenge. Since they are only kinda temporary..I think you should pull from the counter color, but in a lighter hue. I wouldn't go greenish on the cabs..as it will compete too much with the tiles..and they are wonderful. A gray will keep with the clean mod feel and not fight it all....and THEN you can go green again on the walls to tie it all in.
Totally agree on NO NO sea foam!!! You want a green that is based on the tile shades, but muted way down...basically grayed out..so it can be deep with out being dark, but NOT get all easter eggy which is what happens when you just add white to a pure shade.

If gray is too scarey on the uppers..then you could pull off a neutral that matches the cab shade, but it will look more like you tried to match and really, you can't. If you wanted to really be radical...you could take off the doors of the uppers..have open cabs that the insides were matching the tile green..and do a real metallic silver on what is left showing on the frames...THEN it would play up the stainless real nice...

And now I will shut up.
Oh wait..if you want to see anything before you do it..just let me know..I have a whole host of computer programs from designing..to mock up kitchens and such. And I can tell you good colors..oh, and NOW i will really stop..

!

I want to tile our backsplash now. But in plum and lavendar shades. My Husband will now hate you. ;)

Our cabinets are oak... and we love them. But that's us. :)

Oh--well, with that tile, you can't do the red I previously suggested.
Pretty, pretty tile, though!

Beautiful- So light and airy! I would leave the cabinets exactly the same color - just add the clear varnish. The walls I would have very, very pale as well.
