last night hubby got his hair cut at the local hipster barber shop where they serve you pbr. the guy cutting his hair, after hearing zade excitedly scream from the ergo (daddy! daddy! daddy!) said to him:
'do you have kids?'
um, yeah. the one that was just calling me daddy? that one.
hubby explained that we adopted her. haircutting guy says:
'oh, yeah, i couldn't tell if she was yours because her skin's so dark'
and then:
'yeah, i forgot adoption was an option. but after all, angelina did make it trendy.'
uh huh. that's us. being trendy adopting a kid.
Meredith was all up over that this morning on the morning show. She was very critical of Madonna for adopting as a fashion accessory and stated that Madonna should have given money instead. I guess we know how she feels.

I get really depressed when I read stuff like this, because it reminds me that the mainstream views adoption the way its presented in the media, and the media SUCKS!
Maybe a good project would be to collect all the good, realistic, and truthful articles about adoption that can be found in the mainstream media and then put out a press release or something announcing them. Something - ANYTHING - to get the media's attention and start shedding truthful light on adoption.

There was a line in the British Comedy "Absolutely Fabulous" about mixed race babies being the new hot accessory - hotter than designer handbags. Who knew I was so hip?
People don't know what to say, and sometimes they say really stupid stuff! Who else would Zade be calling daddy if it wasn't your hubby?

ugh, that's a zinger.

She's too dark to be yours? Well she's not mine, she's OURS, she's adopted.

I don't know how to say about this, but I'm sure I'm hurt as a parent... I'm sad of this guy. I wonder if you'll ever come to him again. *sigh*

Well, I expect men to be... okay, I won't go the sexist route... but jeez, how stupid - can't he tell you were the trend setters as your daughter is older than Angelina's daughter?
Posted by: Avonlea | 27 October 2006 at 06:43 PM
well, looking on the kids' part - certainly they are lucky because there are people like you who are willing to stand as their real parents, to love and support them like their real mom and dad. that's one of the sweetest thing in the world.

People are stupid. Let them be stupid, and just feel sorry for them.
